You pay to insure your boat. So why not winterize your boat!
Here are a few of Five Star Insurance vital winterizing tips for boat owners
Many boat owners have already taken their boats out of the water for the winter. But, what they do after that will make a huge impact in the condition the boat will be in next year. Here are five important tips you can pass along to help reduce the chances of surprises a few months from now. We'll start with the basics...
1. Before winter storage, all the wet materials need to be cleaned out of the boat including any fabrics that can hold moisture. This will help prevent musty smells in the boat after the long winter.
2. Clean and maintain the canvas that protects the boat all season long. Most canvas leaks are due to dirt being trapped between the canvas threads. This dirt will act like a funnel and allow water to pass straight through. Don’t forget to re-protect the canvas with a product like 303 Aerospace Canvas Protectant.
3. One of the most highly neglected boating accessory is the trailer. Brake service, tire maintenance, paint protection, lubing, and greasing brakes and bearings will keep your customers in business.
4. The boat’s hull drain plug needs to be pulled when stored outside of the water. If your customer’s shrink wrap or cover fails, the chance of water build up is a concern. Your customer does not want rain water to fill the bilge allowing the motor and systems to be submerged in water.
5.
The boat, motor and all systems should be professionally winterized including the installation of marine antifreeze. The use of marine antifreeze not only protects the systems from freezing temperatures, but has corrosion inhibitors that help control the decay of metals inside the cooling systems.
